We are seeking a Field Archaeologist to join a busy archaeological team delivering projects across a range of development and infrastructure sites. The role will involve supporting archaeological investigations from initial preparation through to completion, working in accordance with approved written schemes of investigation, project designs, health and safety procedures, and professional standards. You will contribute to the accurate identification, excavation, recording, and interpretation of archaeological remains, often working outdoors in varying weather and site conditions.
Key responsibilities will include undertaking fieldwork such as evaluation, excavation, watching briefs, and mitigation works; excavating and recording archaeological features, deposits, and finds; completing context records, plans, sections, photographs, and daily site documentation; and assisting with the cleaning, labelling, packing, and processing of artefacts and environmental samples. You will communicate effectively with supervisors, specialists, contractors, and members of the wider project team, raise potential archaeological or safety issues promptly, and help maintain high standards of workmanship and data quality. The role may also involve assisting with post-excavation tasks, site reporting, equipment maintenance, and travel to different project locations.
Applicants should have relevant practical experience in commercial or research archaeology, with a sound understanding of archaeological excavation and recording techniques. A relevant degree or equivalent professional experience is desirable, together with a willingness to work towards appropriate professional accreditation. You should be physically fit, dependable, organised, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Strong attention to detail, clear written and verbal communication skills, and a commitment to safe working practices are essential. A full driving licence, flexibility to work away from home when required, and the ability to manage changing site priorities would be advantageous.
